One year after the project was completed, the sustainable landscaping of the International School of Luxembourg’s courtyard, designed and implemented by Plantations Weisen, is revealing the full beauty of its plant selection. Where planters once offered glimpses of young shoots and freshly tilled soil, there is now a vibrant, dense, and remarkably harmonious landscape that wraps around the play structures.

1. Dense landscape planters and abundant blooms

The success of a completed landscaping project is best appreciated over time. One year after planting, the perennial and grass beds have grown to a spectacular size :

  • An abundance of perennials: The custom-made wooden planters are overflowing with delicate Lindheimer gauras, panicle hydrangeas with generous cream-white blooms, and coreopsis in vibrant shades of yellow.

  • Splashes of color and fragrance: True lavender, blue wood sage, and purple Russian sage provide an aesthetic and nectar-rich structure that’s ideal for stimulating children’s senses.

2. A landscape design tailored for shade and play

In addition to the flowering plants in the planters, the garden’s vertical structure is now fully functional:

  • The living canopy of the roof-top plane trees: Pruned horizontally along bamboo supports, the plane trees will form a true living canopy above the walkways.

  • Playful trails and natural materials: The wood-chip paths, log stepping stones, and wattle fences blend seamlessly with the tall trees, whose trunks have been protected.

3. An oasis of academic freshness born of a successful synergy

Today, this greening of the schoolyard provides children with an ideal environment for learning and well-being:

  • A high-performance cooling oasis on campus: The shade cast by the roof structures and the evapotranspiration from the dense foliage help moderate the ambient temperature on sunny days.

  • A successful collaborative effort: The success of this project hinges on seamless coordination between the Plantations Weisen team (from design to planting), ISL, and our colleagues specializing in the installation of playground equipment and a custom automatic irrigation system.

By bringing this sustainable landscaping project to life, Plantations Weisen demonstrates that it is possible to transform a schoolyard into a vibrant, colorful, and resilient natural oasis in a sustainable way.
