– International School of Luxembourg

Planting vegetation in a schoolyard is a skill that Plantations Weisen has mastered perfectly. In this second installment, we highlight the planting project that is transforming the ISL’s playground into a true living oasis, designed to flourish throughout the seasons.

1. Soil preparation and adding organic matter

Once the wood-chip planters were assembled (as we saw in Episode 1), our landscape architects coordinated the delivery of high-quality topsoil. Delivered and spread using specialized equipment, then refined by hand, this enriched soil provides the essential foundation for nourishing the future flower beds and ensuring deep root growth.

2. Choosing the plant selection: trees, perennials, and grasses

For this school outdoor space design, each tree species was carefully selected for its hardiness, visual appeal, and how it will change over time:

  • Shade trees and guided structures: Standard trees planted in wire mesh pots for optimal establishment, as well as trees pruned into a canopy or espalier shape to form a natural green canopy over walkways.

  • Arbors and shrubs: Placed at the back of a flowerbed, they will add structure to the landscape with their evergreen foliage, which changes beautifully in the fall.

  • Perennial and grass beds: Fragrant and nectar-producing plants (sage, lavender) combined with airy grasses (sedge) to add texture and fragrance and stimulate children’s senses.

3. The benefits of plants: shade, coolness, and well-being

Located along the edges of the playground structures, which are set on a cushioned surface, these ecological and educational plantings will do more than just beautify the playground:

  • Creating a school cool island: By absorbing solar radiation and releasing moisture through evapotranspiration, trees and plantings will naturally lower the ambient temperature on hot days.

  • Improved air quality: The dense foliage of trees and shrubs filters out dust and purifies the surrounding air.

  • Sensory calm and stimulation: The textures of the grasses, the scents of the perennials, and the sound of the wind rustling through the leaves will create a soothing environment, ideal for the students' well-being and concentration.
