Winter is the time when the garden can finally breathe and fall asleep peacefully before spring. However, this is not a reason to abandon it because it is at this time that we can become aware of what it contains, transform it and give it strength.

Here is a brief overview of the steps to take to prepare for this long-awaited season in the garden.

Who says you can't plant in winter?

We agree, it's harder to get your hands in the dirt when it's really cold. In fact, it is totally possible to plant even in winter!

Contrary to popular belief, frost these days does not prevent plants from growing well. The earth will certainly freeze on the surface, but it will remain quite warm at the bottom.

Naturally, it is advisable not to plant on days when temperatures will not exceed -5C°. In addition to being very cold, your plants could still feel the heat.

The plant hedge, a great classic of French gardens, is unparalleled in creating effective fences, partitioning the garden or creating intimate niches in the heart of it. Yew, cherry laurel, shrubby honeysuckle or boxwood are the shrubs of choice for this type of garden, but they require regular pruning, so you might as well know that... Very dense, they offer a safe shelter in case of vis à vis.

On the property line, the usual cypresses, pyracanthas and privet can be accompanied by photinias, whose young shoots take on a warm flamboyant hue, eleagnus with silvery foliage and whose delicate blooming reminds one of the sweet scent of carnation, or bamboos (giant or smaller), which are always very airy and exotic, even colorful.

Winter, the right time to plan!

You don't have a terrace to have lunch on in summer? Why not consider it? And what better way to dress up the empty corners of your garden than with new beds?

A lot of questions can be raised and if there is a time to think about it, it is in winter!

The end of winter is the perfect time to dream about your future garden and the new arrangements that will be possible to implement, for example :

  • Prepare the ground for the creation of a lawn: to do this you can start by marking out the area, ploughing or spading the soil to remove large elements such as stones and stumps, and pulling out weeds. You can also improve the soil with compost.
  • Design a vegetable garden: take advantage of a rainy day to draw up the plan, think about crop rotation and start ordering seeds if you haven't already done so. On sunny days, install the borders, clear the ground, and prepare the soil.
  • Planting a hedge: there is still time to plant some of the shrubs that will form your future hedge. Flowers, berries or colored and evergreen foliage, defensive hedge, varied hedge, privacy or decorative, the choice is vast and the possibilities multiple.
