The therapeutic garden, also known as a care garden or life garden, is a project adapted to the specific needs of people with disabilities.
BEFORE
The center's garden was a vast expanse of lawn that was hardly used and had only a few benches that were sometimes very far apart, making it a challenge for residents to reach them.
After
The challenges
Transformation of a green space into a real tool beneficial to the residents of this center for the elderly, with the primary goal of therapeutic and rehabilitation without neglecting the well-being. Residents must be able to use this free but safe space independently.
The objectives set by the therapists and the management of the center are multiple and specific. They should include the pathologies and needs of each resident and must integrate well-defined therapeutic targets: revalidation after hospitalization, functional autonomy, preservation of verticality and prevention of falls by including people with motor and physical disabilities (behavioral problems, communication problems, etc.).
The 3D plan
Here is the plan of the project of rehabilitation of a simple garden, in a real therapeutic asset for the seniors of Luxembourg. This large-scale project will transform a neutral, open space into a space designed to provide a soothing, therapeutic and secure environment for the residents of the CIPA center in Belvaux. The plans were made by our landscape architect Jeremy.
The purpose
The proposed pathway allows the integration of motor and cognitive activities by creating pathways with sufficient width. One cannot speak of a garden without plants, true Proust's madeleines for our elders. They offer a real refuge value by their color but also by their perfume. They also offer a spatio-temporal reference point with the seasonality of the flowers, thus breaking the routine of the residents and taking them out of the institutional setting.
With this project, our landscape architect is creating the first therapeutic garden in the Grand Duchy.
A few steps...
1.
Layout of the pathways
Installation of a perimeter paved border to delimit the pavement of stabilized surfaces to delimit and maintain more easily the different spaces with a small last minute addition of a barefoot path.
2.
Installation of furniture and structures for motor activities
On the left side, a wooden deck has been installed that can accommodate garden furniture (and seating for up to eight people). This terrace naturally extends the interior living space by offering a new space of conviviality as well for the adults as for the children...
3.
Planting of the plants
The planted areas along the route have been carefully designed with a selection of plants that form a diverse and harmonious plant palette. Among the plants chosen are forsythia, with its bright yellow branches that herald the arrival of spring, hibiscus with its large, bright flowers, lavender with its bewitching fragrance and purple flowers, peony with its round, fleshy flowers, hydrangea with its delicate, elegant flowers, and lilac with its clusters of fragrant flowers.
4.
Installation of lawns
The therapeutic garden of a Residential and Long-Term Care Center (CHSLD) for the elderly, also known as CIPA, recently installed a lawn to add a touch of greenery and comfort to the residents. This lawn is ideal for creating an atmosphere of relaxation and well-being in this garden dedicated to therapeutic care for seniors. There are many benefits to a lawn, including the fact that it provides a soft, comfortable surface to walk and sit on, as well as a visually soothing surface for the eyes. In addition, the lawn is easy to maintain and requires little watering, making it ideal for gardening in a healthcare environment. Residents will be able to enjoy this beautiful outdoor space and benefit from its many advantages for their health and well-being.
In conclusion
We have been able to meet the different requirements of our client, particular by its nature and its users. The new configuration of the once neglected garden has not only delighted the therapists who initiated and carried out the project in the creation of a new daily work tool, but above all it has given a new impetus to the motivation of the residents.
